WASHINGTON: On Monday, President Donald Trump announced that he intends to pardon "a lot" of individuals charged in connection with the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, reiterating a promise he had made frequently during his campaign. Speaking to supporters at Washington's Capital One Arena, President Trump did not provide a specific number of those he plans to pardon.
According to a source familiar with his plans, President Trump aims to reduce the sentences of some individuals involved in the assault on police officers and grant full pardons to those who did not engage in violent acts.
Over 1,580 people have been charged for their involvement in the riot, which was an unsuccessful attempt by Trump supporters to prevent the certification of the 2020 presidential election. Among those convicted are leaders of the far-right groups Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, who are serving time in federal prison for their participation in the violence. The U.S. Justice Department reports that more than 600 individuals face charges for assaulting or obstructing law enforcement during the incident.
As part of his 2024 campaign, Trump has pledged to pardon many of those charged, asserting that they have been unfairly treated by the legal system.
