A petrol-laden tanker exploded in Ibadan early Wednesday morning, resulting in the death of the driver and leaving another person injured.
Yemi Akinyinka, the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, confirmed the tragic incident in a statement issued later in the day. According to Akinyinka, the tanker lost control, collided with two other trucks, and overturned into a nearby pit before catching fire.
The explosion occurred around Fijabi House, Agbowo, and the Ojoo/Iwo Road Expressway. Emergency services received a distress call about the fire at 2:45 a.m., prompting a swift response. Firefighters were quickly deployed to the scene, where they worked to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby residential areas.
Upon arrival, personnel discovered three trucks, each about 20 meters apart, involved in the incident. The tanker driver was tragically burnt to death, while the motor boy was rescued and taken to the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan for medical treatment.
Akinyinka added that the explosion destroyed the tanker, though the agency’s personnel successfully rescued the other two trucks from further damage. The cause of the incident is under investigation.

The service swiftly deployed personnel to the scene and curtailed the fire from spreading to the nearby residential area. On arrival, we met three trucks of 20-metre distance from one another involved in the fire incident.
The driver was burnt to death while the motor boy was rescued alive and taken to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, for treatment.
The agency’s director of operations, Ismail Adeleke with team members, the police, and some other security agencies were at the scene to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
